The awarding process begins with the nomination of candidates. Nominations can be made by state or private universities, the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI), scientific institutions or research bodies, professional organizations and scholars, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Indonesian Embassy/Representative abroad, foreign embassies/representatives in Indonesia, and individuals. Subsequently, the nominated individuals or groups are selected by experts from various disciplines who are part of the Habibie Award Selection Committee
The winner of the Habibie Award will receive:
a. Medal
b. Certificate of appreciation
c. Cash prize of US$ 25,000
The Habibie Award has been organized since 1999 by the Human Resources Development in Science and Technology Foundation (Yayasan SDM Iptek), which was established on May 12, 1997, by Prof. Dr.-Ing. B.J. Habibie, Dr. Hasri Ainun Habibie, Dr.-Ing. Ilham Akbar Habibie, and Dipl.-Ing. Thareq Kemal Habibie. The organizational structure of Yayasan SDM Iptek includes:
Yayasan SDM Iptek has two main programs: providing scholarships for studies in domestic and international universities, and awarding the Habibie Award. However, since 2011, Yayasan SDM Iptek has focused its main program on the Habibie Award. In 2020, the Habibie Award was renamed to the Habibie Prize, which is the result of a collaboration between Yayasan SDM Iptek and the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency.
